The unique and curious cat faced figure is thought to have formed the base of a column on the Rock of Cashel. It is probably Romanesque and dating to the earlier medieval period. Cats have been regarded as sacred since earliest times and the only carving that relates to it is the cat-like face found on St.Caitghearn’s church on the Beara Peninsula.
